Two-way traffic now moving on US 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass
SKYKOMISH – The Washington State Department of Transportation opened US 2 just east of Skykomish to two-way traffic after completing emergency bridge repair work at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23. All legal and permitted weight vehicles are allowed to use the bridge. Drivers on US 2 should also plan for a full closure of the highway five miles west of Skykomish (milepost 44) on Tuesday night, Nov. 24. This closure will allow WSDOT emergency contractors to replace a culvert damaged in last week’s storm.
Full closure of US 2 Tuesday night
The storm also took a toll on an embankment located on US 2 between Skykomish and Index. The embankment collapsed and damaged a culvert. Contractor crews working for WSDOT need to close both directions of US 2 Tuesday night to replace the culvert. The closure will be from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday. “We know there is never a good time to close a highway,” said WSDOT Assistant Regional Administrator Dave McCormick. “But it is important we replace the culvert now to prevent any further damage to the highway.” Over the past few days crews have worked to stabilize the slope where they will place the culvert during the full overnight closure of the highway. This prep work helps keep the full closure to a minimum.
